"The metabolism of these microorganisms causes processes that were also previously unknown in the Atlantic," says marine biologist Dr Carolin Löscher from GEOMAR, lead author of the current study. Among other things, the team was able to prove the existence of microbes that convert dissolved nitrogen compounds into pure nitrogen gas, but also into nitrous oxide.
